Two bikers die in separate weekend crashes
A deadly weekend on Jamaica's roads has claimed the lives of two motorcyclists in separate crashes in Clarendon and Westmoreland.
Dead are 48-year-old Marvin Carridice of Hibiscus Terrace in Lionel Town, Clarendon and 22-year-old Maurice Robinson of Fort Williams in Westmoreland.
Police reported that about 10:15 a.m. on Sunday, Carridice was travelling along Bustamante Drive in Lionel Town on a black Honda motorcycle when a collision occurred with a Toyota Probox motorcar travelling in the same direction.
Investigators say the bike reportedly made contact with the rear section of the motorcar before Carridice lost control. The motorcycle veered off, and he fell before the bike slid several metres along the roadway and crashed into a perimeter wall and other roadside fixtures.
Carridice sustained serious injuries and was rushed to the May Pen Hospital where he later died while undergoing treatment.
In the second incident, Robinson was travelling along the Fort Williams main road in Westmoreland about 5:00 p.m. on Saturday when the motorcycle he was driving crashed into a parked Toyota Coaster motor truck.
The impact caused severe injuries and extensive damage to the bike.
Robinson was assisted to the Savannah la Mar Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The Whithorn and Lionel Town police are now investigating both fatal crashes.
Up to March 3, a total of 44 civilians had already died in road crashes across the island, highlighting ongoing concerns about road safety.
